Memphis and Shelby County Pediatric Group is a recognized Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), having NCQA recognition since 2020. Our providers ensure that we provide effective and efficient care by incorporating evidence-based guidelines in caring for all our patients. We have served the Whitehaven community for over 40 years, caring for families in Memphis and the surrounding areas. Our providers specialize in pediatric care of newborns, until their 21st birthday. We are committed to providing access quality care while advocating healthy living for your child(ren). It is our pleasure to serve the community by putting your children's health first.

Graduate of Meharry Medical College with over 50 years of pediatric experience

Dr. William Terrell Jr. has been a pillar in the Whitehaven community for over 50 years and his work has not gone unnoticed. his longtime commitment to pediatric care and to the community has earned him several governors appointed positions. Dr. Terrell is currently the Medical Director with Juvenile Court in Memphis. There are many more accomplishments to his credit, but these, coupled with the delivery of quality care to young patients and families, have earned Dr. Terrell and his colleague; Dr. James Carter, reputations as premier "Doctors for Teens and Tots."

"I chose pediatrics because children are honest," says Dr. Terrell. After serving as a career U.S. Air Force officer, he chose a career path in medicine, earning his medical degree graduating from Meharry Medical College.

Reflecting on the past 50 years in Whitehaven, Dr. Terrell recounts the highs and lows of the socio-economic landscape in the community and how today new housing developments, model schools and business development show signs that the community has made a tremendous comeback.

Dr. Terrell wants his patients to know that the intent of the providers of Memphis and Shelby County Pediatric Group is to provide the best quality of care available.

James E. Carter, M.D.,

Graduate of Meharry Medical College, board-certified with over 41 years of pediatric experience

Dr. Carter is a board-certified pediatrician. He attended Meharry Medical College, earning his medical license in 1981. he completed his pediatric residency at Meharry Medical College, Hubbard Hospital, in 1984. Following graduation from his pediatric residency, he entered the Unites States Navy, where he served as a Navy pediatrician at Guantanamo Bay Naval Air Station between 1984 and 1985. After Leaving Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital, he served as chairman of pediatrics at US Naval Hospital Millington from 1985 through 1988. After leaving military service in 1988, he served as an in-house pediatrician at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis, through 1990. He joined Memphis Shelby County pediatric group in 1990 and has been a member of his practice for over 30 years.

Serving as a pediatric physician is the main highlight of Dr. Carter's long medical career. his goal, in pediatrics, has long been to take care of children in areas of health, education, and social development. When you come to see Dr. Carter you have to be ready to show him what you have learned in school and life. He feels that it is important for parents and children to be aware and alert to the fact that it is their responsibility to prepare themselves for future endeavors, whether it be education, career, or employment. He strongly believes that preparing for a successful life includes maintaining good physical, educational, and social health.

So, parents and patients, when you come to see Dr. Carter, be ready for a new health evaluation experience. He loves to listen, he loves to talk, and he loves to teach. He is looking forward to seeing you and, hopefully, the next several years of your life, providing you with good health and the tools you will need to step out into the world as a healthy, happy adult.
